New chapter in the history of the balalaika was opened in the 80 years of the last century, the activities of a passionate lover of folk art Vasily Andreyev (1861-1918). From childhood he showed great musical talent, playing many instruments. Overheard the sound of the balalaika, he is fond of her and her life becomes an enthusiast. Andreev acquainted with the best balalaika players-fans of the time, takes over their art, but not limited to this. He compares the different patterns of balalaika, examines them in terms of acoustics, delves into historical research. In collaboration with experienced music makers, he gradually develops the type of instrument, who, with his light hand was finally confirmed in the future.
Throughout his subsequent life «the father of Russian balalaika», as they called Andreev, has devoted her propaganda. Activities were ebullient and versatile. He has been acting as a virtuoso soloist, purposefully contributing to the formation of the balalaika as a full-fledged concert instrument. Another aspect of his work - pedagogy: it deals with many students, organizes various balalaechnye circles, courses, classes, aims to return the balalaika the masses. In addition, it compiles and publishes manuals on the first play the balalaika.
Making music together with the students gives us the impetus to yet another important endeavor: Andreev organizes balalaechny ensemble, and this will work out with the music master F. Paserbskim variety balalaika - a tool kit of different size and pitch. Of previously its basic form received the name «balalaika prima». Ensemble (who later became the orchestra) under its founder, with great success on tour in Russia and abroad, in particular at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1889. His performances delighted the well-known French composers - C. Saint-Saens, Jules Massenet, B. Godard, and the Andreev was elected an honorary member of the French Academy of Fine Arts. In Russia, a great musician met with understanding and support of prominent representatives of the national culture - Leo Tolstoy, Anton Rubinstein, F. Chaliapin. Known enthusiastic words Tchaikovsky: «How delightful these balalaika! What a striking effect can they give in the orchestra! By timbre - is an indispensable tool! »Broad concert and teaching activities Vasily continued until the last days of his life.
The great merit Andreeva lies in the fact that he was the founder of balalaechnogo repertoire: in addition to arrangements of Russian folk songs he had written about 40 original works. Many of his waltzes, mazurkas and polonaises still popular in the professional concert practice and in recreational usage.
